about isdn
What is ISDN?
ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) is a digital telephone service that provides fast, accurate data transmission over existing telephone wiring.

What are the benefits of ISDN?
ISDN offers upload and download speeds of up to 128kbs, and because you have a digital connection, dropped calls are almost non-existent. ISDN is a tried and tested technology that is the perfect alternative for those who can't get DSL, yet need to connect at speeds higher than normal dial-up speeds.

Can I use an existing analog modem with ISDN?
No. Internet access over ISDN line requires the user to have a terminal adapter, router or ISDN modem.

What do I need in order to use ISDN?
In order to use ISDN service, you must have a special ISDN line provisioned by your local phone company. Next, you will need an ISDN modem or router at your location to terminate the ISDN circuit. These routers/modems can be leased from your local phone company, or can be purchased at most major computer stores and/or online shopping venues. Finally, you are ready to set up your account with us for a connection to the Internet. Account setup with Leapfrog normally takes only 15-20 minutes; another few minutes to configure your modem/router, and you'll be surfing in no time!

How much does ISDN Internet access cost?
There are generally four costs involved in ISDN access: your local phone company's charge to install the line (a one-time fee), a monthly line charge from your local phone company (contact them for details, but we've found that most phone companies charge between $60-$100 per month for the ISDN line), and a monthly service provider charge from Leapfrog Internet. Please see our
residential or business sections for more details. You will also need a modem/router, which may be leased from your local phone company or purchased online or at any computer store.

Will Leapfrog Internet configure my modem/router for me?
As there are literally hundreds of models of routers and modems, we simply don't have the resources to be able to provide ISDN modem or router configuration services. What we will provide you, however, is all of the information you need to connect to our service, no matter which model you use. If you are new to ISDN and have a limited knowledge of modems and/or routers, we recommend that you have someone with a technical background handle your configuration and setup. You also may want to refer to the manufacturer of your modem/router for setup and/or configuration help- we have found that websites are best as they often have updated drivers you can download to your modem. In addition, here is a site that might help setup and/or troubleshoot your ISDN modem.

Where is ISDN Internet access available?
Our ISDN Internet access is available nationwide. Please contact our sales office to verify what plans are available to you at 877.807.0989 or sales@leapmail.net.

What is Multilink PPP?
The Multilink point to point (MPP) bundles multiple B channels for data rates over 64 Kbps. It allows dynamic bandwidth allocation. We support the Multilink PPP protocol.

What is dynamic bandwidth allocation?
Dynamic bandwidth allocation is the ability for a device to drop and add channels as needed. True dynamic bandwidth would allow a terminal adapter to allocate a second channel if the load on the first one becomes too heavy. Using dynamic bandwidth allocation is also helpful in reducing the number of hours used monthly overall. We recommend this to our limited 128k dual channel users to minimize their usage to stay under the 300-hour monthly limit.
